There is no better way to combat the summer heat by digging into a big bowl of fluffy shaved ice, and Ice Monster, a blooming shaved ice chain in Taiwan has just the thing. Shaved ice is never a novelty in Taiwan, as you will bound to see a handful when you stroll down to any of the night markets. While most ones are dappled with more traditional toppings, like taro, red beans, matcha powder, mochi, etc, ones from Ice Monster are like the Lady Gaga equivalent in the shaved ice universe, where one keeps reinventing itself by having the most outrages, yet sensory triggering combinations of toppings such as coffee marshmallow, almond black beans, pineapple melon and many more.

We opted for the almond black beans and Mango Manic. When you put the first spoonful in your mouth, it just melts right down, but the flavours remain, which makes you keep wanting to repeat the same action, until there is nothing left in the bowl. The shop is full of customers of all ages, and has quite a vibrant ambience, I guess that’s because everyone is happy when it’s dessert time! But expect there might be a queue, especially during the summer times.  

Since the opening of its first store in 1997, Ice Monster has now over 20 outlets spanning in all over Taiwan, as well as Japan, China and USA. Talk about taking shaved ice to an international stage!
