What is the best typewriter for writers?
I am not a writer and never will be. However, if asked to choose my favourite typewriter for writers, then the most obvious answer fo me would be the Hermes 3000! Created by the Paillard company in 1958, the Hermes 3000 was packed full of cool and innovative features for its time. Whilst this solid and highly practical machine was built to satisfy the needs of most demanding typists, it may surprise you with a delightfully light and buttery smooth touch. The iconic appearance sets it apart from the rest of the pack and it is a real crowd pleaser. A must buy for any serious writers or typewriter enthusiasts. Beware, it will be love at first type...
My second choice would be a 1950's to early 60's Smith Corona Clipper, Silent, Sterling or Super, all fine machines. I enjoy using my Clipper (1960), as it's a solid no nonsense typer that will happily allows you to keep on typing for years to come. Besides, when you are bored of typing, you can simply sit back and marvel at this beauty!
Other more vintage machines I recommend would be the Smith Corona Silent (1947), the Corona Standard or the Junior Model S (1937) which is pictured below. All of these machines are a nice type and add a touch of nostalgia to the experience. Obviously, the more modern machines (mid 1950s onwards) are perhaps more hard-wearing with added features, however, if you like the vintage feel, then these are good choices for you.
There are a lot of typewriters out there and its also down to personal taste, budget and availability. You can't go far wrong with any of the above and I am pretty sure the Hermes 3000 would be on the top of many experienced typist's list!
